Uber Fresh Juice Yum

Last week, my friend Kevin dropped off several bottles of juices for me to try— what a treat! I felt so spoiled, and thoroughly enjoyed the fact that we were instructed to finish them all within a few days. Normally, I’d spread out such an extravagance over days and days… but hey, I had to follow the “Best by 8/22/14” sticker, right? So I gulped away, day and night, and drank to my heart’s content. It was GREAT!

Then I finished the last one, and there were no more in my fridge. Inspired to be healthful and enjoy delicious treats, I decided I’d try my hand at juicing. As much as I enjoyed the juices from Uber Fresh, you know me– when I love something, I almost always try to make it myself! Like my favorite milk tea, coffee, and mango drinks. Yum! I like to think I can save money doing it myself, and it makes me feel like an industrious wife or something.

So I got a hold of a good juicer, bought tooooons of fruit from the market, and went to work.

My haul of produce for juicing

I’d done this before, actually. My parents used to have a juicer and we made apple carrot juice, orange juice, grape juice, and whatever else we could think up. I remember loving it– from pushing the fruit down the chute to watching gushes of juice flow out to sipping that creamy, frothy, fresh-pressed juice! I didn’t know why my parents stopped, but I was sure excited to bring that tradition back to my family!

So I got my pounds and pounds of carrots and apples and started washing and cutting them into pieces so they’d fit into the chute. I tried to tell myself it was only a little annoying to have to prep the fruit. I should have taken photos of the mounds of produce on my counter, but I honestly didn’t think I was going to share this with you guys (I’m supposed to promote Uber Fresh’s juice, not mine, right??), so I didn’t bother. But I wish I did, so I could show you how LITTLE JUICE I was able to extract out of SO MANY APPLES AND CARROTS!!!

Now I know why my parents stopped juicing.

Guys, the final yield was like 3 cups. Not three glasses full; I mean, literally 24 ounces. All of my carrots and apples made just 3 cups of juice. Are you kidding me?!

very little juice

I felt TOTALLY robbed. How was it possible that pounds and pounds of produce came down to three measly cups of juice?! Suddenly, those 17 ounce bottles of Uber Fresh juice started to seem even more precious. How could I have polished them off so thoughtlessly?! There were like 20 pieces of produce invested in that bottle! I was appalled. This was totally not worth the trouble of going to the store, cleaning, cutting, juicing, and then cleaning all the juicer parts. Suddenly, $9/bottle seemed much more reasonable.

But I reasoned that I’d have better luck with grapefruit and oranges. They’re way juicer than carrots and apples, right? So today, I hauled out my 4 huge grapefruits and 16 oranges. I washed them extra well, because I hadn’t splurged on organic (which Uber Fresh DOES splurge on!). I cut off the skin on all 20 of those finicky citrus fruits, and then cut them into pieces. That was just the prep. Then I juiced them, and was rewarded with a flowing river of citrus deliciousness.

Still, it only yielded two of these.

not much juice.

That’s six standard cups. Total. (And yes, that’s a large Hass avocado used to show relative size. A ruler might have been more useful… sorry.)

Let me repeat: SO MUCH FRUIT FOR SO LITTLE JUICE. Wow.

And it wasn’t just the fruit that I had invested– it was the time and energy to buy, wash, peel, cut, and juice 30 grapefruits and oranges, and then clean up afterward.

Yes. After sharing my personal juicing fiasco with my friend Kim, (who was giving me ideas on ways I could grant her more entries into this giveaway (I did not)), I decided I should share with you all the totally-not-worth-it-for-me activity that is making my own fresh juice. Because I’m sure I’m not the only one who hesitated at the price. But I’m here to testify that not only is Uber Fresh’s juice “fresh-pressed, made-to-order, organic, locally-sourced, raw,” and “California-sunshined,” but SOMEBODY ELSE BUYS THE FRUIT AND VEGGIES, PREPARES IT, CUTS IT, JUICES IT, AND CLEANS UP THE MESS FOR YOU. If that’s not music to a momma’s ears, I don’t know what is.

So if you haven’t already gotten on it, perhaps my story will encourage you to hurry up and enter the giveaway! You have one more day before it ends.

(If you’re not the lucky winner, ORANGEyou glad you can still order it to be delivered to your home? Hehe. :D)

orange you glad

I know that is why I stopped juicing and drink smoothies instead! I tried saving the pulp to use somewhere else and never did. It just always felt do wasteful . The über fresh juice sounds yummy !

I totally hear you on the pulp! I’d been meaning to search for ways to repurpose it but it started getting moldy before I got around to it :/.
