As Halloween was approaching this past year, one of my male coworkers joked about wearing a onesie to work. I’m pretty sure he meant something like this:

…but I immediately pictured him in this:

Baby-Onesie

Sorry, buddy.

Male coworker #2, a new dad, started howling with laughter and explained what a onesie technically is. Kudos to him for knowing the difference! I, on the other hand, tried to focus my mind on rainbows and butterflies. Suffice it to say, some of us need to brush up on our layette lingo.

Whether you’re an expecting mother or simply discussing costume ideas, it’s a helpful thing to understand the subtleties between certain articles of clothing, especially when onesies are involved. If you’re new to the baby-clothes madness, here’s a diagram I created (and husband beautified) to show you how they’re all related:

As you’re preparing your own baby’s layette, here are some things to keep in mind:

There are a lot of things to say about baby clothes, but when it comes down to it, you figure out what you really like and need once your cutie pie arrives. I’ve had some friends who had summer babies, and they just let them scoot about in their diapers most of the day! So don’t think too hard about it (like I did), and just enjoy those chubby thighs and dimpled hands as much as you can!

P.S. Mr. Coworker, I believe the correct term for you is adult footed pajamas. However, if you search “onesie” online, one-piece costumes do come up. So I guess the word has been frindled and it’s probably okay to say onesie after all :).
